Work on your business not just in your business
How do you get control of your business? Most small business people that I deal with all say that they know that they need to work on their business but instead spend all of there time working in their business. While they know that they need to get control of their business, their business is in control of them. Many know they need help, but are afraid of asking for it, and they are afraid of hiring people to work for them.
Because they got into business in many cases because they did not like being told what to do, and they do not want anyone telling them what do do, even if it is themselves. “What I need is someone who will make me do what I can” was first written in the 1800’s by Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is as true today as it was then. That is what business coaching does.
They are also afraid of acting – they are often driven crazy by the voice inside of their head that tells them they are a fraud and they do not know what they are doing, so the are not in control of their business because the crazy voice inside of their head is in control of them and that causes them to delay acting. If we talked to others the way we talk to ourselves we would be put in jail. Often times one of the first things we do with our business clients is get them to be kinder to themselves. Operating an existing business to us means taking a company that was not created using our methodology and going through the discovery phase and launch phase but applying the same principals to pivot the business to be back in alignment with the owners original idea for an onCOREventure.
Most small businesses (under ten employees) reach the point where the owner forgets why they are in business. They started their business with the best intentions to create work life balance and they are so far from having that they are close to despair.
What do we do?
We help them get back to why. We identify what is working well and what needs to be tweaked and we help develop systems and processes to meet the business objectives that we help them set.
To do this we start with an evaluation of the current business and life satisfaction which is done on line, a review of the core values of the owner and we selectively apply pieces from the discovery and launch methodology to make the existing business into an onCOREventure.
As we do this, we then start to look very quickly at the performance of the business and where it is headed. What does the pipe line of new customers look like? What are the fixed costs? What are the variable costs? How many products are offered? What is the retention rate of customers? What could you get your existing customers to buy?
Most small businesses do not have the luxury of spending money on major efforts, they have to make small but impactful changes in how they approach their business, what they do themselves and have others do for them and how they find others to help them.
